The next generation book tour

When I first heard about the new initiative from Powell's Books -- making the author tour a movie -- I was delighted. We're in the logistical stages of planning a tour just through Montana and Wyoming, and the thought of trying to do that nationwide is enough to make me embrace any alternative. (Especially when I've seen the numbers for some other authors' tours: flying to a new city every day, and doing a reading for 10 or 12 people. The argument goes that the associated media attention also sells a lot of books, but it has to be discouraging.)

But then I thought about it from my perspective as a reader. I love author events because the author is there live in person. Would I attend a film of it? This may be heresy, but I have to admit that BookTV mostly bores me. I love books, and I love the hidden backstory involved in meeting an author in person. But when you filter that through the medium of film or television, for me at least. . . I'd rather read the book.

I wish Powells well. If anyone can pull this off, this store can. Its author interviews far outclass the competition. But my own tour planning will continue.
