Tuesday in Cody

One of the more intriguing public discussions of the legacy of Caroline Lockhart is coming up on Tuesday. As part of a "One Town, One Book" series (as so many communities have done around the country), the entire town of Cody, Wyoming, is reading Lockhart's novel "The Lady Doc." What makes this particularly interesting is that "The Lady Doc" is a book-length indictment of Cody society circa 1911.

When first published, the novel split the town. But how many people have even heard of it today? One measure will be how many people show up to the Cody Library (it's at 1057 Sheridan Avenue, right downtown) to discuss it Tuesday evening October 17 at 7:00 p.m.

I'm honored to be one of the panelists leading the discussion, along with Park County Library leader Frances Clymer and (I believe) former Buffalo Bill Historical Center curator Paul Fees and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area historian Chris Finley. Even if you haven't read the novel, I think the discussion will prove an interesting window on the history of Cody and the interplay of fiction and community self-image in the West.

For more information you can call 307-527-8820. I hope to see folks there!
