An appeal based on humanity

I wish I had some sympathy for Cal Thomas. The political columnist explains here his personal nightmare of going through airport security. I too find airport security maddeningly inconsistent, expensive, and likely ineffective (though of course that’s impossible to prove). Thomas is stuck in a difficult situation: he apparently has a name that happens to match someone who's a potential terrorist.

But you know what? It's just sort of an unlucky break. He was born into the wrong name. And what does he say when other people are born into difficult situations?

Say you're born black. Here's Thomas:

The impediment to greater black progress is not racial discrimination. It is family breakdown.

Say you're born with AIDS. Here's Thomas:

The unpleasant consequences of sexually transmitted diseases are not the result of intolerant bigots seeking to denigrate others. They are the result of violating God's standards.

Say you were born in a third world country. Here's Thomas:

It's their fault because they have chosen, or refused to overthrow, the wrong system of government, an oppressive religion, an unworkable economic system.

Say you're born a woman, or poor. Here's Thomas:

If you tell me you do not believe in God and then say to me that I should brake for animals, or pay women equally, or help the poor, on what basis are you making such an appeal?

Funny, I can't find anywhere in the Bible where it says people who were born with terrorists' names have the right to fly on airplanes without going through a slight hassle first. Mr. Thomas, you're making an appeal based on your humanity. I support it. But now I'd like you to support some others' appeals as well.

(And now, like David Crisp, I pledge to stop posting on such easy targets.)
