"God's own airline"

Gary Ferguson may be Montana's most underrated writer. Ferguson, who speaks in Billings on Tuesday and in Powell, Wyo., on Feb. 24, is the author of a dozen books on nature, many focusing on Yellowstone National Park.

But he's got a new gig recently, with the Los Angeles Times. You don't even have to shell out money for his books now -- you can sample his stuff on the Web for free. For example, Tuesday's story on the surfeit of trumpeter swans in northeast Idaho features sentences like these:

Trumpeter swans, North America's largest native waterfowl, typically float on 8-foot wingspans over the rivers and marshes of the northern Rockies like God's own airline...

And there is Clegg's technique: wielding the spotlight beam on his head with a Ray Charles bob and fade, not just dazing young swans but somehow actually herding them toward places where he can better reach them.

Though I actually prefer his more essayistic rumination on winter and drought, here.
