Who creates jobs?

As reported in Jan Falstad's column in yesterday's Gazette, one of the most successful businesses in this part of Montana is King's Cupboard chocolates.

An entrepreneurial start-up now boasting 25 employees and a stellar national reputation in the high-end food market, it's a surprising story for Montana economic development -- and it should be instructive.

King's Cupboard has not, to my knowledge, ever taken any state economic development funds. It has never requested a relaxation of environmental or other regulations. It's directly based neither on the state's natural resources nor on the Internet. It has become a Montana success story because two very smart people had a great idea and loved living in Montana.

It's continually surprising that I, of all people, would be a lone libertarian voice in Montana's ongoing economic development debate, but let me try again: Bureaucracies do not create jobs. States do not create jobs. Communities do not create jobs.

Entrepreneurs create jobs. If we want jobs in our communities, the most important thing to do is to make sure our communities are places where people want to live.
