Upcoming books

Here are some of the just-published and forthcoming books about the West that I'm looking forward to reading:

1. The novelist Pete Fromm has just published AS COOL AS I AM, the story a teenaged girl living in Great Falls. I love Fromm's attitude toward his writing: he says that he sits all day in his basement playing with his imaginary friends. That attitude comes through in a lively, exuberant style that makes all of his work fun to read.

2. Nature writer Gary Ferguson has a book coming out from Norton next year, GREAT DIVIDE. It's a history of the idea of the Rocky Mountains -- what this region has meant to the country through the years. Gary's been working on this book for three years now, with a break to write the delightful HAWKS REST.

3. Mark Spragg has a forthcoming novel called AN UNFINISHED LIFE, to be published in late fall 2004, at the same time that a movie of the same name will be released. Mark wrote the screenplay with his wife Virginia; the movie will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom and star Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, and Morgan Freeman.

Finally, I'm not sure I'm going to read it, but I am intrigued that Aron Ralston -- the guy who cut off his right arm after five days being trapped in a Utah rock-climbing accident -- will be publishing (also in fall 2004) an account of his story. Boy, that's a hard way to get a publishing contract!
