Can Libertarians be Red Sox fans?

I couldn't help but wonder at the juxtaposition of news events, both on October 1:

1. The Free State Project announced the results of a membership vote on which state they hope to turn into a libertarian paradise. (They want 20,000 libertarians to move to some small state so as to gain a lot of influence in its politics.) They turned down both Montana and Wyoming in selecting New Hampshire.

2. The Boston Red Sox began the 2003 playoffs the same way they've finished every other baseball playoff since 1918: with a heartbreaking loss.

Now, these 20,000 libertarians (actually, they only have 4,600 so far, but they're *optimists*) are willing to give up their homes, their jobs, their friends and family in their current locations, so as to move to New Hampshire and... pay lower taxes. I don't know, I guess it sounds like a good tradeoff to them.

But do they realize they're going to have to root for the Red Sox? I mean, I'm stuck doing it as an accident of birth. But they would forsake their current lives to make this choice? Believe me, it would strain *anybody's* optimism.

(I'm having a lot of fun with the Free State Project. Look for my work in Writers on the Range -- or perhaps in this space -- coming soon.)
